Methyl methacrylate (MMA) adhesives have a different cure mechanism than other two component reactive adhesives. These adhesives, based on a modified type of acrylic, are fast curing and offer high strength and toughness.

Supplied as two parts (resin and catalyst), they are usually mixed immediately before application. Some more specialised types are also available where the components can be applied in separate operations: the resin component to one surface to be bonded, the catalyst to the other. They tolerate minimal surface preparation and bond well to a wide range of materials like metals, engineering plastics, composite and fiberglass. The products are available in a wide range of cure speeds and as liquids or pastes.

The cure profile of MMA adhesives can be adjusted more readily than other types of two component adhesives. This allows formulation of adhesives that have a slower reaction rate immediately after mixing to allow more time for adhesive application and assembly of parts (longer worklife). After a short period of time (induction period), the rate of reaction increases to provide more rapid strength build-up. This reduces the time components need to be fixtured before bonded assemblies can be processed further.

The new Araldite® 2023 adhesives are engineered for tough joining and sealing of large parts without sagging, making them ideal for vertical and complex bonding applications. Offering high gap filling and elongation properties, the new flexible adhesives are formulated to improve assembly processes and cosmetic appearance when bonding dissimilar materials such as composites, metals and plastics.

It is a two-component, room temperature curing, flexible, methacrylate adhesive with an open time of 10 minutes. It is a thixotropic paste that can fill gaps up to 30 mm. This adhesive is ideal for bonding composites for the manufacturing of large structures.

Araldite 2050®
Araldite® 2050 is an ultra-fast curing, two-part acrylate adhesive designed to accelerate structural bonding of thermoplastics, composites and metals.

Araldite 2051®

A new line of surface-activated methacrylate adhesives, designed to increase customer bonding options, has been introduced by Huntsman Advanced Materials. The Adhesives
allow fast cure and durable joining of metals, thermoplastics and composites. The high strength adhesives are suitable for use in the loudspeaker, electrical/electronics,
transportation, marine, construction, furniture and general fabricating industries.

Known as Agomet® methacrylates, the eight adhesives and four hardeners are part of the broad Huntsman Advanced Materials range of Araldite® structural adhesives. The new products exhibit the unique ability to bond substrates via surface pre-activation or by bead on bead application. Surface pre-activation allows users to apply hardener/lacquer to a substrate up to 30 days before the adhesive is added to bond an assembly. The adhesives can also be hand mixed or can be dispensed by meter-mix machines.

Easy-to-apply Agomet methacrylates are ideal for bonding small and large areas; with work lives ranging from one to twenty minutes. Handling time varies from two to thirty-five minutes, and the adhesives have gap-filling properties from 0.4 mm to 5 mm depending on the application method used. Cured Agomet methacrylates exhibit lap shear strengths as high as 35N²/mm.

The new series of Huntsman Advanced Materials methacrylates includes:

  • F 300 – A three-minute handling time, fast curing material of medium viscosity for “no-mix”, and meter/mix application
  • F 305 – A fast-curing adhesive comparable to F 300 but having low viscosity, ideally suited to rapid production line bonding, e.g. for assembly of ferrite cores.
  • F 307 – A high viscosity (350 Pas), gap filling, low shrinkage adhesive. Offers three-to-four minute work life and a short handling time
  • F 310 – A high lap shear strength, medium-viscosity system that attains handling strength in less than twenty minutes.
  • F310 has gap-filling capabilities up to 3mm depending on the application method.
  • F 330 – A high lap shear strength, gap filling, adhesive system with very good temperature resistance.
  • F 347 – Bonds well to a wide range of metal and plastic materials. Good results can be achieved without extensive surface preparation. The product is available in
    cartridges with static mixer, or can be applied as a “no-mix” system.

Bonding special plastic materials with Low Surface Energy (LSE) like Polypropylene (PP), Polyethene(PE), Polyamide (PA or Nylon/Teflon), Thermoplastic Olefin (TPO) and those specially filled plastics that are greasy in appearance will be difficult and there are no known adhesives available that can perform the adhesion effectively. 

In order to bond all these Low Surface Energies materials, either it has to be treated by way of applying high voltage arching like corona plasma discharge on the surface before introducing any suitable adhesives or to apply with the latest development of special formulation of KA Series methyl methacrylate adhesive (MMA) formulated by Everwide Chemical Company. 

These unique adhesives have the ability to bond and adhere strongly to all these LSE substrates like PP, PE, PA and TPO after going through the course of curing. This KA series of MMA cures at amber temperature, has high shear strength, no volatile organic content (100% solventless), no surface treatment required and able to resist chemicals and water.
